Tips on choosing a free rehab center in California
- Verify DHCS licensure and third-party accreditation. Every residential alcohol and drug program in the state must be licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). Licensure now comes with an American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) level-of-care designation, so the DHCS public database is the quickest way to confirm a facility’s scope and compliance. Once that box is checked, look for CARF or Joint Commission accreditation for an added quality signal.
- Confirm Drug Medi-Cal participation. Centers that contract with their county under the Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System (DMC-ODS) can bill Medi-Cal directly, keeping treatment free for eligible residents while guaranteeing a full continuum of care—from withdrawal management to outpatient and residential programs.
- Look for evidence-based and culturally responsive care. California’s MAT Expansion and Access Points projects fund widespread Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and culturally tailored services for Spanish-speaking, tribal, LGBTQ+, and justice-involved communities. Ask whether the facility offers MAT (buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone) and specialized groups or peer staff aligned with your background.
